The mission of Friends of Oakland Parks and Recreation (FOPR) is to improve the quality of life for all Oakland citizens by generating funding and support for projects and programs that enhance and supplement the recreational, environmental, educational, beautification and leisure activities offered through the Oakland Office of Parks and Recreation.
FOPR is a 501 (c) (3) designated park advocacy organization dedicating to preserving, protecting, and improving Oakland’s parks for all citizens. Since 1981, FOPR has increased private and public commitment to Oakland’s park system developing new parks, renovating tot lots, playing fields and recreation centers. Oakland parks are extraordinary public assets that offer a unique opportunity to enhance both our City and the greater Bay Area. Raising funds to maintain the parks and championing these parks can be achieved most effectively through partnerships between city government and the parks’ users and beneficiaries. Friends collaborates with the City of Oakland’s Park and Recreation Department, while maintaining its own independence.
