Overview

Over the last 20 years Friends has
retrofitted over 60 playgrounds and ball fields throughout Oakland. We
accomplish these projects through other organization and private and public
funding. Over the years Friends has renovated Woodminster Cascade in
Joaquin Miller Park, created the Magnet site for persons with disabilities at
Arroyo Viejo Recreation Center and has retrofitted many of the playgrounds
and ballfields throughout Oakland.

Currently
we are working on
Raimondi Park
in West Oakland. We have successfully raised
$3 million for construction towards Phase 1. We would like to thank the Wayne & Gladys Valley
Foundation, the San Francisco Foundation and the Oakland Athletics for their
ongoing commitment to this project.

Park.
Phase 2 of the Rockridge Greenbelt project is
now complete. Please visit Hardy Park along Claremont Avenue and walk
along the DMV corridor to see the new park improvements. |

Our Project Process
FOPR creates unique non-profit, private/public
partnerships which can help control project
costs by negotiating the design and construction contractors. Can control
project scheduling with frequent project meetings. Insures stable staffing
levels for the project by selecting a project team with sufficient resources to
accomplish the job. Combines the best of private-sector, public sector, and
non-profit organizational strengths into community-based planning design and
implementation. We
accomplish this through the following process:
The Process
- Friends takes a comprehensive evaluation of
each site to determine the existing conditions: it is safe, is it
accessible, is it fun?
- A comprehensive report is then produced with
preliminary project budgets.
- Oakland Community Organizations are identified
as contact points for community meetings.
- In some cases questionnaires are used to
survey the neighborhood about how the park is used and what are the
neighborhood's priorities.
The Design
- In the design process the site is measure and
a site analysis is developed.
- The site analysis is used to develop a list of
potential improvements
- A conceptual design for improvements is
created.
- The designs and budgets are reviewed and
refined.
- Once the designs are completed they are
submitted to the community for review.
The Development
- The design team, working closely with project
construction staff, produce construction documents for final review by Friends
- Construction drawings include site plan with
layout, grading and drainage information
- The design/build approach allows construction
to begin immediately following the approval of plans and final budget.
The Result
- A combination of professional workers and
volunteers help to make these large projects into reality.
- Friends has consistently met project schedules
on time and within budget.
