Walter Williams is a mentor, community activist, and an entrepreneur.  Walter has been a resident of Oakland for 13 years and understands the significant role that local clubs and parks play in the lives of the youth and the lasting impact those activities have on being responsible citizens and community members. Walter is founder of I Love Oakland, and has worked in the fundraising arena for the past several years. An avid sportsman, Walter’s involvement with Parks and Recreation began in the early 1990’s when he coached boys’ basketball for four years in Daly City, CA.  When Walter and his wife moved to the Maxwell Park neighborhood in East Oakland, Walter wanted to “really” get to know his neighbors, so he began knocking on doors and introducing himself. Soon afterwards, he organized weekly neighborhood walks, where neighbors get together, with their children and dogs, to cruise the neighborhood, picking up litter and reporting abandoned cars and unusual activities. This experience led to his nomination for the 2004 Local Hero Award through District #4.  Additionally, Walter hosts a monthly Economic Empowerment lectures series, which includes topics from real estate to Financial and Retirement Investing.  The series is free to the community.
