PARK STEWARDSHIP
Guardian Angels for Neighborhood Green Spaces

Become a Park Steward, and safeguard our precious green spaces.

The Oakland Parks Coalition (OPC) is looking for volunteers who love their city, neighborhoods and parks.  Join others who spend a few hours each month as a Park Steward.

The Park Stewardship Program is run by OPC with support from the Friends of Oakland Parks and Recreation (FOPR) and the Trust for Public Land (TPL).

As a Park Steward you will...

  • adopt and watch over one park

  • evaluate the park's condition by completing a 10 point survey several times a year

  • monitor the par regularly, and report problems to the Oakland Parks and Recreation Department

  • initiate hands-on projects to improve the park - clean-ups, greening, programs and events (optional, but encouraged).

Goals

Park Stewardship Action Plan
OPC is working to engage and empower communities to share in park stewardship by identifying and training community "Park Stewards" for each city park and selected medians. The Stewardship program hopes to inspire residents to actively care for their city parks, thereby protecting and enhancing Oakland's park system.

Advocacy
Build a community voice for park advocacy.
Advocate for OPR administrative accountability; performance standards; improved organizational structure, staffing and funding and an empowered work force.

Standards

Establish new standards for park maintenance and recreation programs. Hold the City accountable for upholding these standards.

OPC Membership
Develop city-wide membership in OPC that is representative of all ages, cultures, races, user groups.

Partnerships
Encourage communication and partnerships between community, public agencies and private organizations.

Volunteer and join a growing number of Oaklanders who nurture and protect their public parks.
Sign up now or call the OPC at 510.287.2693 for information or to find out when you can attend our next monthly meeting.
