PARK ACTIVATION

Teaming with community groups, city agencies and funding partners, we produce capital projects that activate parks and playgrounds for local neighborhoods. In recent years, we’ve held ribbon-cutting ceremonies for new playground equipment, restored sports fields and newly-planted trees, while working with partners as varied as the NFL, Kaboom! and Levi Strauss & Co.

Current Projects

DEEP EAST OAKLAND COMMUNITY GREENING

Through the Community Greening project of Oakland’s Better Neighborhoods, Same Neighbors program, we will bring together multiple community groups, organizations and local jurisdictions to plant 2,000 trees in deep East Oakland through a combination of street trees and trees on privately owned properties. The project will improve the tree canopy to mitigate harmful heat island effects, making it easier for community members to spend time outdoors.

HOLLY MINI PARK RENOVATION

Located on Holly Street by 98th Avenue, Holly Mini Park has long been neglected, resulting in blight and avoided by the families and children who reside in the neighborhood. Design plans for the new park are almost complete. All the elements were recommended or approved by the local community in a series of open meetings. Current plans call for construction of the new park to begin in 2020.

Recently Completed Projects

LAFAYETTE AND LINCOLN SQUARE REFURBISHMENTS

Leveraging funding from Sunlight Giving Foundation and working in partnership with the Old Oakland Neighbors and the Lincoln Square Recreation Center, we restored the playground equipment at Lafayette Square Park and Lincoln Square Park in 2019.

TREES FOR THE OAKLAND FLATLANDS

Funded by a grant from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and working in partnership with Trees for Oakland, we planted 1,475 trees in the areas of Oakland rated in CalEnviroScreen’s top 25% (most severely impacted), or within one-half mile of these areas, between 2017 and 2019.  The primary purpose of the program is to absorb and sequester carbon dioxide as the trees grow.
