Looking Back at the 2021 Parks Challenge

Thank you to the amazing players and generous sponsors who made the 2021 Parks Challenge such a success! From June 21 through July 11, more than 200 teams completed 1,300 missions at parks across Oakland, from DeFremery Park to Leona Heights Park and so many places in between.

The 2021 Parks Challenge was a free, fun for all ages scavenger hunt, presented in partnership with The Trust for Public Land and with support from the Oakland A’s. Teams checked in daily using the GooseChase app to find 70 fun missions challenging them to visit their favorite parks, discover beautiful views and complete family-friendly activities.

Missions included a visit to the mural at the East Oakland Sports Center, a climb up the Woodminster Cascades at Joaquin Miller Park, an evening walk under the necklace of lights around Lake Merritt and a wet surprise at Splash Pad Park. We saw silly dances and beautiful views, family picnics and slippery slides. It was such a gift to see Oakland’s parks through your eyes!

Thanks to our presenting sponsors, as well as local partners like Schnitzer Steel, Decathlon, Oakland Public Works and Ruth Stroup Insurance Agency, teams competed for terrific prizes like tote bags, picnic coolers, nature journals, park posters, signed A’s gear and back-to-school backpacks.
