King Estate Open Space: Invasive Species Removal

  • King Estates Crest Avenue Entrance to King Estate Open Space Oakland, CA United States (map)

OKNIA.org volunteers will continue removing these target species, especially "pincushion flower" (Scabiosa atropurpurea) from the Open Space. This small shrub-like invasive European plant has white/pink/ dark purple flowers. Our goal is not to eradicate scabiosa (probably not possible and not entirely desirable), but now while the soil is moist is good time to begin to control the rapidly expanding population

When: Saturday 17 January, 9:00 am-11:00 am

Where: Meet at Crest Avenue Entrance to King Estate Open Space (KEOS)

What to bring: Pick-mattocks, full size or garden size seem to work best, but garden knife, or any narrow tool that may be effective in prying up woody plants should be OK. Bring work gloves and also kneepads if you prefer to use them. Some tools, knee pads and gloves will be available on site.

Dress for the weather: Some slopes are steep so footwear with good traction is recommended.
