OKNIA.org volunteers will continue stewarding at the King Estate Open Space.
Following the low rainfall winter, the soil will likely be dry and hard. Several invasive plant species need to be controlled within King Estate Open Space: The particular species will depend upon the number of volunteers and the conditions in mid-April. ▪ Scabiosa and Bristly ox-tongue will require standard size pick mattocks. This will be muscular work. ▪ Himalayan blackberry pruning will require hand clippers, hedge trimmers or loppers. We will do this in the only wetland in the Open Space, which is an important wildlife water source.
When: April 18, 9:00 am-11:00 am
Where: Meet at Crest Avenue Entrance to King Estate Open Space
What to bring: Most of the plants can be pulled up by hand. If the soil is too dry for that, garden hand tools work well, such garden size pick-mattock, garden knife, or any narrow weed removal tool. Bring work gloves and also kneepads if you prefer to use them. Some tools, knee pads and gloves will be available on site.
Dress for the weather: There is no open water. Your footwear may get muddy, but mud can be avoided. Leather gloves, long pants and long sleeves recommended. ▪ Italian thistle will require small garden knife or pick mattock (small or large). These plants are prickly may already be starting to disperse seeds.
►Bring tools if you have them. Some tools and will be available on site. Dress for the weather. Knee pads may be a good idea, but not required.
►The plant debris will be bagged and carried to the nearest Open Space Entrance.
